Object storage price comparison
The cheapest object storage by headline price is Hetzner (Storage Box (flat-rate)) at $0.0037/GB-month (~$4/TB), with Wasabi (~$0.0069/GB) and Cloudflare R2 ($0.015/GB) close behind. The hyperscalers are pricier — AWS S3 Standard $0.023/GB, Google Cloud $0.020/GB, Azure Blob Hot $0.018/GB — and they also charge for egress, whereas R2 and Wasabi charge $0. The right pick depends on how much you store and how much you download.

Vendor pricing as of June 2026 — estimate, verify on the provider pricing page. List prices change frequently and vary by region. The "1 TB / mo" column is storage only (1,000 GB × $/GB); egress and per-request fees are extra.
What the price actually includes
- Storage $/GB-month — what you pay to keep data at rest. This is the headline number, but rarely the whole bill.
- Egress — data transfer out to the internet. The big differentiator: Cloudflare R2 and Wasabi charge $0; AWS/GCP/Azure charge $0.087–$0.12/GB. See the egress comparison.
- Operations — Class A (writes/lists) and Class B (reads) per-million request fees. Tiny per request, but they add up for high-traffic apps.
- Minimums — Wasabi bills a 1 TB minimum and a 90-day minimum storage duration; B2 and R2 have no such floor.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest object storage in 2026?
By headline $/GB-month, the cheapest is Hetzner (Storage Box (flat-rate)) at $0.0037/GB-month, followed by Wasabi (~$0.0069/GB) and Cloudflare R2 ($0.015/GB). But the true cheapest depends on egress: if you serve a lot of data, Cloudflare R2's free egress can make it cheaper overall than a lower $/GB store that charges for downloads.
Why is AWS S3 more expensive than R2 or B2?
S3 Standard charges $0.023/GB-month for storage plus ~$0.09/GB for egress after the first 100 GB, and per-request fees. Cloudflare R2 ($0.015/GB) and Backblaze B2 (~$0.006/GB) charge less for storage and little or nothing for egress, so they undercut S3 substantially for download-heavy or budget workloads. S3's advantage is its deep AWS integration and regional coverage.
Are Backblaze B2, Wasabi and R2 S3-compatible?
Yes. Backblaze B2, Wasabi, Cloudflare R2, DigitalOcean Spaces, Vultr and Linode all expose an S3-compatible API, so most tools and SDKs that work with S3 work with them after changing the endpoint and credentials.
What hidden costs does object storage have besides $/GB?
Three big ones: egress (data transfer out to the internet), per-request operation fees (Class A writes and Class B reads), and minimums (Wasabi has a 1 TB minimum charge and 90-day minimum storage duration). Always model your egress and request volume, not just stored GB.
