Cloud egress / data-transfer price comparison
Egress is the data-transfer fee for moving data out of a cloud to the internet, and it is where surprise bills come from. Cloudflare, Wasabi, Hetzner charge $0 for egress (Backblaze B2 is free up to 3× stored data, then ~$0.01/GB). By contrast AWS charges ~$0.09/GB, Azure ~$0.087/GB and Google Cloud ~$0.12/GB after small free allowances. Serving 10 TB/month therefore costs roughly $900 on AWS but $0 on Cloudflare R2 — often the single biggest lever on a cloud bill.

Vendor pricing as of June 2026 — estimate, verify on the provider pricing page. List prices change frequently and vary by region. The 1 TB and 10 TB columns are a transparent estimate: (GB − free allowance) × $/GB rate. Backblaze B2's free-egress allowance scales with your stored data (3×), so it is shown as a note, not a fixed GB figure; real bills also include cross-region, inter-AZ and CDN factors.
Why egress costs so much
On the hyperscalers, egress is priced far above the underlying network cost. It functions partly as "data gravity" — a switching cost that makes leaving a platform expensive. Storage specialists compete directly on this: Cloudflare R2 built its whole pitch around zero egress fees, and Backblaze B2 pairs with CDNs for free egress. For a deeper explainer see why cloud egress fees are so expensive.

Frequently asked questions
Which cloud has free egress?
Cloudflare R2 charges $0 for egress to the internet, full stop. Wasabi includes free egress under a fair-use policy (egress should not exceed stored volume). Backblaze B2 gives free egress up to 3x your stored data, then ~$0.01/GB, and unlimited free egress via CDN partners. AWS, Google Cloud and Azure all charge for egress after a small free allowance.
How much does AWS charge for data transfer out?
AWS gives the first 100 GB/month of internet egress free, then charges about $0.09/GB up to 10 TB, tapering toward $0.05/GB at very high volume. So serving 10 TB/month costs roughly $900 before discounts. Cross-region and inter-AZ transfer are billed separately.
Why are cloud egress fees so expensive?
Egress fees are priced well above the underlying bandwidth cost and act partly as a switching cost (data gravity) that discourages moving workloads off a platform. EU and US regulators have scrutinised them; AWS, Google and Azure now waive egress fees when you fully leave the provider, but normal day-to-day egress remains pricey on the hyperscalers.
How can I cut my egress bill?
Put a CDN or cache in front of your origin (Cloudflare, Fastly and bunny.net pull from Backblaze B2 with free egress), move object storage to Cloudflare R2 (free egress) or Wasabi, and avoid unnecessary cross-region transfer. Use the egress calculator below to compare scenarios.

Egress rates are each vendor's published internet data-transfer-out price, captured June 2026. Hyperscaler egress is tiered and tapers at high volume; the figures here use the entry tier. Confirm on the provider's pricing page. See our methodology. All figures are estimates.
